The film begins with the commercial pilot Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler) flying the Trailblazer Airlines Flight 119 from Singapore to Honolulu via Tokyo. Torrance is joined by three cabin crew members and 14 passengers, including the homicide suspect Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter). He is handcuffed and being taken to Canada by an officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
As the aircraft flies over the South China Sea, it hits turbulence due to bad weather and ends up claiming the lives of the RCMP officer and a flight attendant. Torrance is forced to make an emergency landing on a dirt strip at Jolo Island in the Philippines. However, the rebel forces controlling the island pose a threat to Brodie and the survivors.
Not long after, the leader of the rebel forces, Datu Junmar, takes the passengers hostage, hoping to extort a huge sum of money for their freedom. Brodie teams up with Louis, who previously worked with the French Foreign Legion, to take the passengers out of the war-torn island safely. They are unwilling to wait for the rescue team to arrive and decide to take action before it's too late.
The duo comes across two rebel soldiers and finds out their hideout location before killing them. Once there, Louis safely transfers the hostages onto a bus, while Brodie takes on Junmar's men single-handedly. However, they overpower him and prepare to kill Brodie before the mercenaries arrive and save his life.
The mercenaries join the fight against Junmar's men alongside Louis, as Brodie and the co-pilot move all the passengers inside the damaged plane under heavy gunfire. One rebel soldier fires a rifle-propelled grenade at the plane, but he is tackled by Louis and killed. Junmar fires at the aircraft as it begins to take off, but he is hit by the landing gear and dies.
Furthermore, Louis doesn't return to the aircraft, knowing what awaits him in Canada. He escapes into the nearby jungle with the ransom money meant for the passengers to start a new life.
The airline helps Brodie fly the aircraft to a nearby island named Siasi, where the passengers and crew find the emergency services waiting for them.
After Trailblazer Airlines learns about Brodie's emergency landing, their crisis manager, David Scarsdale (Tony Goldwyn), arranges a mercenary unit led by Shellback (Remi Adeleke) to rescue the passengers.
While overseeing the rescue mission, David finds out about Brodie's altercation with an unruly passenger in the past, due to which he was demoted to flying low-profile flights. Also, the owner of Trailblazer Airlines, Terry Hampton, accepts that Brodie was ordered to fly through dangerous weather to increase their profit margin, leaving David frustrated.
