Gunther is gearing up to face Jey Uso in a rematch for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the June 9 edition of Monday Night RAW from PHX Arena. Fans can expect a competitive back-and-forth contest as both stars are equally talented inside the squared circle. However, if The Ring General loses, he may leave the red brand.
The Austrian superstar will most likely end up losing to Jey Uso since the latter became champion less than two months ago at WrestleMania. In a shocking turn of events, Gunther can walk away from Monday Night RAW in search of new opportunities. The Imperium leader has been competing on the red brand for a long time and has faced almost every notable name in the men's division.
Gunther will need some fresh challenges and goals to get his career back on track after a major setback at 'Mania. Hence, he can jump ship to Friday Night SmackDown and begin a new storyline. After showing respect to Pat McAfee at Backlash, The Ring General may even turn babyface for the first time in his main roster run in the Stamford-based promotion.
That said, the proposed angle is hypothetical, and nothing has been confirmed. Regardless, a potential move to SmackDown may benefit the 37-year-old, as he can feud with top names like John Cena, Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, and Jacob Fatu.
On the REBOOKED podcast, ex-WWE star Matthew Rehwoldt (fka Aiden English) expressed his views on Gunther and explained how his character was largely defined by his title reigns. Rehwoldt said that The Ring General's gimmick needed to stand out without a championship to truly get over with fans.
"It's time for him [Gunther] to make himself stand out without that [holding a title]. It has for the last two years; he's been IC [Champion] right into the world title basically. If the only thing that defines you is having a championship, having a title, and holding it over people's heads, you've got to have more than that. And so it's time for him to find that." With WWE RAW just hours away, as of this writing, it will be interesting to see whether Gunther manages to shock the world by defeating Jey Uso.
