Northern Ireland are back in action on home soil when they take on Iceland in a friendly at Windsor Park on Tuesday. This will be the first meeting between the two nations since September 2007, when Arnar Bergmann Gunnlaugsson’s men picked up a 2-1 victory in their European Championship group-stage clash.

Northern Ireland failed to return to winning ways on Saturday when they fell to a 2-1 friendly defeat against Denmark at the Parken Stadium. This followed a 5-1 hammering at the hands of Sweden on March 25, a result which saw their five-game unbeaten run across all competitions come to an end.

Northern Ireland will look to bounce back on Tuesday and gather momentum ahead of their return to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where they have been drawn in Group A alongside Germany, Luxembourg and Slovakia.

On the other hand, Iceland picked up a morale-boosting result last Friday when they secured a 3-1 victory over Scotland in their friendly clash at Hampden Park.

Before that, Gunnlaugsson’s men dropped into League C of the UEFA Nations League in March when they fell to a 5-2 defeat against Kosovo in their two-legged promotion/relegation clash.

Iceland now go up against an opposing side who have won three of their last four clashes, with a 3-0 victory in the World Cup qualifiers back in September 2001 being the exception.
